Overview

Funding Criteria:

The Foundation provides grants to organisations in the following categories below.

Please note the criteria that apply to each category:

  1. Promotion and education of organic farming and non-domestic animal husbandry and veterinary science
    • A grant is awarded for capital costs only
    • The applicant’s income is less than £1,000,000
  2. Visual and performing arts
    The Foundation supports visual arts projects, theatres and theatre productions, and dance, ballet and opera in the following ways:
    • A visual arts project must involve the organisation’s beneficiaries and a grant is awarded for capital costs only.
    • Theatres may request a grant for capital projects (which includes the costs of building works, and materials and equipment for workshops).
    • Grants of £1,000 are given for the running costs of new theatre productions. Applications should focus on the subject matter of the play.
    • The applicant’s income is less than £500,000
    • Dance, ballet and opera applicants may apply for bursary funding only.
    • Music is not supported as a performing art.
  3. Medical research
    • A grant will be awarded for running (revenue) costs and capital costs
    • Research must not be statistical and should be lab-based.
    • There are no income thresholds
  4. Relief of disability and severe illness
    • A grant is awarded for capital costs only.
    • Except in the case of a hospice, income must be less than £500,000
  5. The preservation of buildings of architectural or historical significance
    • A grant is awarded for capital costs only.
    • The building is owned or leased (for a term of 10 years+) to the applicant.
    • The project cost is less than £5m.
    • The applicant’s income is less than £3m.
    • The building is not used for religious or academic purposes.
  6. The accommodation of those in need
    • A grant will be awarded for capital costs only.
    • The applicant’s income is less than £3m

Capital costs mean: land, property, building materials, other materials of a long term use or nature, machinery, IT hardware or software. It does not include staff costs, consultancy costs, administrative or governance costs and any indirect costs.

Who may apply?

The Foundation welcomes applications from the following:

  • Registered charities or unregistered charities that are excepted, exempt or below the threshold for registration (if the charity is unregistered you must explain why).
  • Community interest companies limited by guarantee.
  • Registered societies.

How much does the Foundation give?

The Foundation typically gives grants of £1,000-£5,000.
