Overview

They believe justice begins where inequality ends. They support organizations that address the underlying drivers of inequality and align with our programmatic work around the world.

Every year, they award roughly 1,500 grants to institutions with transformative ideas and scalable solutions with the aim of achieving the greatest impact. They also award a limited number of grants to individuals, primarily through nomination for their fellowships, building on their legacy of investing in leaders.

While the majority of their grants are identified by the foundation, they welcome proposals that fit within their lines of work. Each program has its own strategy and comprehensive selection process. They aim to be as clear as possible about their priorities, but they know that there are more worthy ideas, approaches, and organizations than they have the resources to fund.

Current Opportunities

JustFilms

The Ford Foundation seeks to reduce inequality in all of its forms, and artist-driven documentary and emerging media projects are crucial to this effort. As part of the Creativity and Free Expression program, JustFilms funds social justice storytelling and the 21st-century arts infrastructure that supports it. The projects and people they support inspire imaginations, disrupt stereotypes, and help transform the conditions that perpetuate injustice and inequality.

They support artist-driven, non-fiction film and new media storytelling projects that explore aspects of inequality and the organizations and networks supporting these projects.

All projects submitted for JustFilms grants will be judged on the basis of social and cultural impact, artistic excellence, alignment with Ford priorities, and creativity and innovation in form. At JustFilms, we’re thinking about our work broadly along these lines where:

  • Political power focuses on a robust civil society and fair governance
  • Economic power focuses on workers’ rights and equitable and just economic policies
  • Cultural power enables artists and culture bearers to shape narratives that promote equality
