Overview

Following the merger of Alcohol Research UK with Alcohol Concern, they have undertaken a strategy consultation and are carrying out a programme to identify gaps in key areas of research and potential for innovation.

This work will provide a robust evidential and conceptual platform for their research programme from April 2019. See below information on grants to date.

The main aims of the Alcohol Research UK are to increase the capacity of individuals and organisations to deal with alcohol issues and also to develop the evidence base. They run a number of grant schemes, some of which are rolling programmes and some of which have deadlines for applications.

Applicants should read both their Research Strategy and the appropriate Guidance for Applicants documents before developing their proposals. Applicants should also ensure they apply to the scheme that is most appropriate to the scale and design of their project.

Small Grants

The Small Grants programme provides up to £8000 for exploratory projects lasting up to 12 months that address emerging issues in alcohol research, employ novel theoretical or methodological approaches, or pilot new work in treatment or service delivery.

The Small Grants programme is intended for stand-alone projects and the scheme cannot be used to part-fund or supplement other studies such as larger programmes, ongoing initiatives or to part fund a PhD. PhD students may, however, apply for funding for a separate or complimentary study.

Alcohol Research UK is not able to fund biomedical research.

Applications are judged according to the following criteria:

  • Is the project innovative in either its theoretical approach, methods or subject area?
  • Does the project have the potential to make a significant new contribution to the alcohol evidence base, either in its own right or as a precursor to a larger project?
  • Is the project realistic and achievable within the budget and timeframe?
  • Does the project represent good value for money?
  • Do the applicants have the requisite skills to complete the project?
  • Is the methodology appropriate?
  • Is the dissemination strategy well targeted, with a reasonable level of impact envisaged?

For full information and details of how to apply, please read their Guidance for Small Grant Applications.

Network Development

  • Up to a maximum of £3,000 will be available for applicants organising a conference or other network events. No institution will be awarded more than £3,000 for network development in any financial year.
  • The network or conference must be relevant to, or will further the aims of, Alcohol Research UK’s programme of work (please note that Alcohol Research UK does not fund biomedical research).

There is no deadline for Network Development awards and the scheme will remain open until the budget is spent.

Conference attendance

  • Up to £300 is available to enable Early Career Researchers* to be able to deliver a paper at a conference which is relevant to, or furthers the aims of, Alcohol Research UK’s programme of work.
  • The paper being delivered must be relevant to, or will further the aims of, Alcohol Research UK’s programme of work (please note, Alcohol Research UK does not fund biomedical research). The paper must be accepted before an application for assistance can be made. It is not possible to offer a bursary for poster presentations.

No more than one grant per individual will be awarded in any financial year. There is no deadline for these awards and the scheme will remain open until the budget is spent.

* Someone who has no more than three years employment [0.2 FTE or above] in an academic institution since completion of their PhD. Applicants with six months or less until submission of their PhD completion will also be eligible. Where an applicant has taken a career break for parental or carer’s leave, this period may be subtracted from the three years.

Research Innovation Grants

See the website for details of this scheme as it becomes available each year.

Postgraduate Research Studentships

They will match fund (£10,000 per year for three years) up to three studentships a year to enable students to undertake research in the alcohol field leading to a PhD.
