Overview

War on Want recognises that the causes of poverty are the same worldwide. In recognition of the realities of poverty within society War on Want allocates a small percentage of funds each year to tackling poverty within Northern Ireland through its Local Grants Programme.

Preference will be given to groups:
with a self-help approach; actively involving the people who benefit from the project; whose annual budget (excluding salaries) does not exceed £10,000.

Applications are welcomed from groups working on the issues of:

  • disability,
  • women,
  • elderly people and
  • minority groups.

The maximum grant available is £500.

Examples Grants:

Training courses which will improve the skills of a committee or group members; publication of leaflets or books providing important and relevant information for a community or group; equipment necessary to help a group in its work; start up core costs for a group just newly formed.

In 1997 31 groups received grants, with awards ranging from £100 to £500. Groups supported include:

  • Mid-Skegoneill Community Group, Belfast which used their £100 grant to set up a small office
  • Mullaghbawn Community Group, Newry which used their £500 grant for training.
