Overview

This project is funded by Atlantic Philanthropies to support the development of Timebanking with a particular emphasis on involving and supporting older people. Funding has been made available through Atlantic Philanthropies to support the development and/or maintenance of Timebanks in a network across Northern Ireland.

The maximum grant awarded in any 12 month period is £3,000.

  • The core values of Timebanking are:
  • Recognising People as Assets
  • Valuing Work Differently
  • Promoting Reciprocity
  • Building Social Networks
  • Respect

Timebank Models

  • Person-to-Person model: This is the most common approach in the UK. It usually involves a ‘broker(s)’who facilitates and records exchanges between individuals and develops the membership of the Timebank.
  • Person-to-Agency model: This is when an organisation enlists people to contribute to its mission or objectives. Service users or local communities act as agents to help an organisation to realise its goals and are rewarded with time credits.
  • Agency to Agency model: The organisation to organisation model enables organisations across the voluntary and community sector to collaborate and share resources for example meeting spaces or expertise on business planning to enable them to maximise the services and support they can offer to users and members.

Timebanking Existing Organisational Practice

An organisation may decide to adopt a Timebanking approach to the work of their staff and volunteers. This is an alternative model to capture the social capital generated by the activities of an organsiation’s staff and supporters and enables wider access to additional support and services by tapping into people’s skills that they may not necessarily bring to the work place or your group or organisation.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for small grants must meet the following eligibility criteria before their application can be considered:

  • Organisations and groups must be able to demonstrate that the project will:
  • Tackle need or disadvantage and benefit the local community or community of interest
  • Ensure older members are widely involved
  • Promote diversity and enhance current resources and service for older people
  • Grants cannot be made to individuals or commercial organisations.
