Sport NI - Events Programme
Overview
Through the Events programme Sport NI also aims to:
- make a positive contribution to the quality of life of those living in Northern Ireland
- help achieve economic development for Northern Ireland and
- improve the international image of Northern Ireland
What types of events can be funded?
In summary three types of events can be funded.
Minor events
These are events that require under £10,000 of funding. International, national and local events are eligible for consideration.
Major events
These events will be considered for support Sport Northern Ireland and include national or international events which will involve a significant number of competitive nations from across the world. Previous events funded in the past include World Indoor Bowls Championships and European Pony Championships etc.
World Class events
Events of this level will be considered initially by the UK Sports World Class Events programme. They will include events of world significance that are likely to attract the highest level of international interest. To make an application for an event of a world class nature applicants are required to complete the UK Sport pre-application form in conjunction with SCNI staff.
- Minor events – a variety of groups can apply including sports clubs and community groups. Major events and world class events - in the majority of cases Sport NI will expect the relevant governing body of sport to make the application. Where appropriate the applicant organisation must have the approval of the sanctioning international sports federation.
- Multi-sport events:appropriate bodies recognised by the sanctioning International Sports Federation.
- Single sport events: recognised Governing Bodies of Sport - Full details of recognised Governing Bodies of Sport are available upon request.
- Events for competitors with a disability: recognised disability organisations, endorsed by the relevant governing body of sport.
- School events: recognised schools associations, endorsed by relevant governing body of sport.
Sport NI will require the governing body to play a lead role in the development of their sport through the event and to have a role within the event organisation structure.
The maximum award is likely to be limited by the event costs and the assessment of the availability of other funding sources.
Sport NI will not underwrite the event in any circumstances.
Bidding Cost
- costs associated with production of bid document
- costs associated with pre-bid promotional activities
- travel and accommodation costs for bid team members
- appropriate insurance
- professional fees associated with making the bid.
Running the Event
- establishing and running the event office
- hiring venues, facilities and equipment
- minor capital improvements to facilities or purchase of equipment
- costs of transport, accommodation and catering as required
- marketing the event
- printing materials
- appropriate insurance
- opening and closing of the event
- accrediting competitors and event personnel
- training of event personnel
- professional fees (including auditors)
Example Grants
Examples of recent sports events which received financial assistance from the Events Programme include:
- 2006 World Women's Open Squash Championships
- 2006 Commonwealth Fencing Championships
- 2006 Commonwealth Judo Championships.

Firstly, contact Sport NI to request a copy of the Information & Guidance notes. The Information & Guidance notes will contain further information about the programme. If the level of funding required is less than £10,000 apply directly to the A4A. Otherwise, complete the enquiry form and return it to Sport NI.
