Sport NI: Active Schools
Overview
"Extra-curricular sport" is defined as: “Sport and other forms of physical activity within a school setting or organised by the school (excluding curricular PE) outside normal school hours”.
This programme is open to Primary, Post Primary and Special Schools registered with the Northern Ireland Department of Education. The focus of this programme will be targeted towards those in year 5 upwards. Schools must demonstrate within their application links with local sports clubs, community/voluntary groups or Governing Bodies of Sport.
Schools can apply for grants from £1,000-£5,000. Clusters of Schools (three or more) can submit a joint application for up to a maximum of £10,000. * Please note that only one application per organisation will be accepted, this includes schools applying as part of a cluster.
Note: There is a £1,000 cap on equipment for single schools and £1,500 for clusters; no single item can be over £1,000 in value.
What are the Programme Priorities?
- To increase participation in sport and physical recreation especially among underrepresented groups such as girls, people with disabilities and ethnic minorities especially in areas of high social need.
- To enable schools that currently do not offer 2 hours of extra-curricular sports and physical recreation per week the opportunity to do so.
- To support the creation of linkages and pathways between extra-curricular (after-school) programmes and club programmes.
- To enable the development and strengthening of partnerships between schools, community and voluntary organisations and sports clubs.
- To encourage increased use of community sports facilities.
