Overview

RYA Foundation Fund

They support clubs, centres and organisations across the UK. Largely charitable and run by volunteers, these venues are constantly fundraising for equipment, safety requirements and training. Their grants help pay for these, often through match funding

Applications can be submitted at any time. They will usually be considered at the next quarterly Trustees meeting.

The RYA Foundation seeks to promote participation in boating by those who are disadvantaged by reason of youth, age, infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances. Organisations and groups that share this aim may apply for grants under the following broad headings:

  • Recruitment and training of staff and volunteers;
  • Purchase of boats and boating equipment;
  • Development of infrastructure to support boating;
  • Development and delivery of boating programmes, projects and activities.

These categories are not prescriptive, and applications may cover more than one heading.

Applications are assessed under four main headings:

  1. improving opportunities for disadvantaged people to go boating;
  2. involving disadvantaged people in the provision of boating for others;
  3. increasing opportunities for volunteering, and
  4. providing good value for money.

Who can apply?

RYA-affiliated sailing clubs and centres, and other organisations that are seeking to develop their facilities or programmes for disadvantaged people, may apply for grant funding. Organisations should have a recognised governing document (such as a trust deed or constitution) and a formal management committee. They may be registered charities, charitable companies, or members-only clubs, and are expected to have in place suitable policies for such matters as health and safety. Where they work with young or vulnerable people they must have appropriate safeguarding policies and procedures.

What can be funded?

The following are examples of what the RYA Foundation will fund:

  • Activities that seek to increase the number and capacity of staff and volunteers to assist with boating for disadvantaged people;
  • Activities that raise awareness of issues surrounding disability and other disadvantages affecting participation in boating;
  • Programmes that seek to increase the participation of disadvantaged people in assisting others to sail;
  • Activities that require the involvement of RYA-qualified instructors to increase on-water activity;
  • Programmes to encourage the involvement in boating of pupils of schools which make provision for disadvantaged people;
  • Programmes to encourage the involvement of disadvantaged people in the sailing activities of mainstream organisations;
  • Purchase of boats and equipment for relevant programmes;
  • Items which increase opportunities for disadvantaged people to participate in boating;
  • Minor adaptations to buildings, equipment, or boats to improve use by people with disabilities;
  • The provision of equipment (such as hoists) to help people with disabilities.

RYA Foundation Youth Fund

The RYA Foundation Youth Fund offers grants to young people under 25 who are committed to boating, and are showing clear promise, but due to their circumstances need financial help to achieve their goals.

The fund is designed to help break down the barriers of inequality that restrict participation by reason of long-term health, disability, low socio-economic group, cultural diverse community or other disadvantage.
