Overview

The purpose of the application must reflect the aim of the Rita Charles Trust Charitable Grant Scheme and must include at least one of the following elements:

  • Provide initial seeding support for programme development;
  • Bring together groups from varying religious and political traditions to work on issues of common concern eg housing, education, poverty, music and drama;
  • Undertake a programme of skills training to enable people to understand and deal with issues affecting their lives;
  • Assist groups in addressing identified needs within recognised, deprived areas.

Applicants must be community groups who are recognised as a charity by the Inland Revenue;

The Scheme is aimed at locally based groups, primarily from the inner city areas of Belfast and not at individuals or statutory bodies. Application from East Belfast groups are particularly welcome;

A wide range of groups such as those involved in cross-community relations work, women's groups, playgroups, community and tenants associations, festival groups and organisations working with elderly and marginalised young people from different religious and political traditions are eligible;

The scheme is aimed primarily at projects which can demonstrate a willingness to explore and develop relationships of trust and understanding between people from different religious and political traditions.

Grants may be made towards the cost of the following:

  • Programme expenses or development costs such as renting facilities, travel and subsistence, creche facilities, equipment of small capital costs;
  • The maximum grant payable is £1,000 but most grants are in the region of a few hundred pounds.
