Overview

Last year, the Petplan Charitable Trust awarded over £850,000 in grants to animal welfare charities and institutions both in the UK and abroad. You can find out about some of the many projects they support, here.

The Pet Plan Charitable Trust are in a position to send much needed help to relieve immediate suffering as well as working towards a better, healthier world of animals. They provide 2 categories of grants: welfare grants and scientific grants.

1) Welfare Grants

  1. Applicants must have registered charity status. Grants will not be given to enable charities to attain registered status.
  2. Grant applications must demonstrate a direct benefit to the species supported by PetPlan Ltd (i.e. dogs, cats, horses and rabbits). Grants to human charities may be considered when it can be clearly demonstrated that the grant will enhance/give support to the animals' best interest. Education is seen as an important role for the welfare arm of the Charitable Trust and requests for funding for education in animal welfare will be considered.

Within this category of grants the Trust offers 4 categories of funding:

  1. One major welfare grant of up to £20,000 towards an innovative proejct to improve animal care and welfare
  2. Up to £40,000 to be distributed for general grants of between £5000 and £7500
  3. Up to £40,000 to be distributed for general grants of up to £5000
  4. Grants to assist with vehicle purchase

General grants can include items such as neutering, kennelling costs, veterinary fees etc. However, please note that the Trust will NOT consider any applications for funding overheads such as rent, general staff costs, etc.

2) Scientific Grants

There are two types of scientific grant available from the Trust:

a) 'Pump Primer' Grants.

The limit for a pump priming grant is £10,000. These grants are available to fund initial research which should ideally lead to further research. All pump priming applications which meet the criteria set out by the Trust are forwarded to the members of the Scientific Advisory Committee for consideration.

Note that :

  • Pump primer applications should be from applicants embarking on a research career
  • Projects should stand alone or may lead to further work
  • N.B. Applicants forming part of a larger team must be responsible for 70% or more of the work

b) 'Full' Scientific Grants

Note that:

  • Petplan Charitable Trust has a strict non-invasive study policy. No experimental animals may be used. Reference should be made to the RCVS guidelines – click here for link.
  • FOR STUDIES INVOLVING TISSUES OR BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES OF ANIMAL ORIGIN, OR CLIENT DATA COLLECTION, funding of grants is contingent on acceptance in writing of your application by your institution’s ethical review process. Applicants should ensure that this acceptance is available at the time of submitting the application.
