Landfill Communities Fund: Public Parks/Public Amenity
Overview
Landfill Operators can choose to pay a portion of their landfill tax, up to 5.3%, to Environmental Bodies (EBs) approved by Entrust, the LCF regulator. These EBs then use the funds to support projects that benefit local communities and the environment within a set criteria laid out in the Landfill Tax Regulations (1996). The full criteria is set out in the Guidance Manual.
The LCF mostly benefits communities living near landfill sites by funding projects that improve the local environment and quality of life.
Object D: The provision, maintenance or improvement of a public park or other public amenity.
Overarching principles:
- The park or amenity must be open and accessible to the general public.
- The park or amenity must not be operated with a view to profit.
- The park or amenity must be in the vicinity of a landfill site.
Your project application will need to provide details of:
- the project site;
- the proposed works;
- how the proposed works will provide, maintain or improve a public park or another public amenity;
- how the park or other amenity is accessible to the public and how they have use of it;
- how the park or amenity is for the protection of the built, natural or social environment;
- how far the project site is from a licensed landfill site; and
- how the proposed works are not required by a planning permission granted on the application of the Landfill Operator (LO), or as a term of a statutory agreement to which the LO is a party.
There are two methods of receiving funding through the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF);
- from an Environmental Body (EB) that distributes the monies on a Landfill Operator's behalf (a distributive Environmental Body); or
- directly from a Landfill Operator (LO) based in England or Northern Ireland.
The majority of projects receive funding via a distributive EB and they would recommend applying to these organisations before seeking funding directly from a Landfill Operator.
You can use their search function to identify EBs who fund in your area.
Entrust are the Government appointed regulator of the LCF and do not provide funding.
