Overview

The Family Holiday Association is a small, UK-wide charity that helps disadvantaged children and their families with much needed breaks.

Government data show that about 2 million families in the UK cannot afford an annual break away from home.

Criteria

Families cannot apply for a break directly. They must be referred by someone working with them in a supporting role (see below).

There are lots of families going through tough times who cannot get away together. They want to make the biggest difference they can to as many families as they can.

They focus their holiday offers on families who:

  • Are on a low income (a household income of less than £24,000).*
  • Have not had a holiday together in the last 4 years.
  • Have at least one child under 18 who will go on the holiday.

*Income excludes non-means tested benefits

Referrers must regist to apply. All registrations are reviewed and approved manually by the team. This means that they will not receive a verification email immediately. During busy periods there can sometimes be a delay in processing referrer registrations.

Who can refer?

A referrer must work for either a registered charity or a statutory provided service. They will usually be someone who works in these types of organisations:

  • Registered charities that provide services related to families.
  • Government provided children's and family support departments such as social services and community health teams.
  • Family support NHS services.
  • Ofsted registered schools, nurseries, and children’s centres.
  • Registered refuge and domestic abuse support agencies.

People who work in these organisations who could support you may have these kinds of roles:

  • Family support worker
  • Social worker
  • Health visitor
  • Teacher
  • Refuge support worker

Your referrer will need to be the person that registers with us on our 'Be a Referrer' page first. Once registered, they will then receive information on how to make a holiday application for your family.

They focus their holiday offers on families who:

  • Are on a low income (a household income of less than £24,000)
  • Haven’t had a holiday together in the last 4 years
  • Have at least one child under 18 who will go on the holiday

What you'll need to do

You’ll be on hand to offer friendly advice from the moment you make an application, right up until the return from holiday.

This will mean you need to help with:

  • Filling in the application form
  • Supporting the family in selecting the best holiday option for the family including when and where to go, and taking into consideration the family dynamics, safeguarding and any other risks
  • Holiday preparations such as travel arrangements, budgeting and identifying important things to pack
  • Collecting photo and story sharing permissions to share with Family Holiday Charity
  • Providing feedback via their questionnaire after the break
