Dunnes CSR Policy
Overview
The Company operates out of the:
- Republic of Ireland (110 stores);
- Northern Ireland (23 stores);
- England (6 stores);
- Scotland (5 stores) and
- Spain (5 stores).
The Company continued to grow and the first Dunnes Stores in Northern Ireland opened in Bangor in 1971. This was followed by the acquisition of a chain of eleven grocery stores which came on the market in 1978.
The first venture abroad was in Spain, which started as a unit in Las Rampas in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol and there are now five stores in the South of Spain. The Company further expanded into England in 1986 and there are now 6 stores throughout the England. Four stores have also opened in Scotland.
Ben Dunne, the founder, was born in 1908 on the shores of Carlingford Lough, in the Co. Down village of Rostrevor. His first business venture was picking berries with his brother which they sold to buy sheep, hoping to raise the fare to emigrate to the America. However, he was noticed by a local businessman as a young man who had a good business acumen and commercial ability and he remained in Ireland.
Dunnes was ranked number 39 in the Ulster Business Top 100 companies in 2012 and made an operating profit of £26m.

No information is available on how the company supports charitable causes (if at all). In spite of numerous attempts Dunnes have not responded to information requests. It is suggested that you contact the local store manager who may be better placed to respond to local approaches.
