Overview

Their grants typically fund activities undertaken by schoolteachers, students, academics and organisations with the aims of:

  • Supporting the teaching and learning of classical subjects and topics, primarily in UK schools, but also amongst the wider public;
  • Increasing access to classics, widening participation and pursuing EDI objectives in UK classics;
  • Increasing the sustainability and viability of classics as a discipline in UK schools and beyond.

Funding Categories

Outreach

The CA supports a wide range of outreach events to promote the public awareness of classical topics. Click here to view just some of the many outreach projects they have supported

Activities might include:

  • public talks, interactive sessions or workshops on the classical world;
  • regional Greek and Roman days involving local communities;
  • theatrical performances (where there is significant outreach component that merits funding);
  • other outreach initiatives aimed at young people or the general public.

The CA may agree to fund travel expenses and associated costs for speakers and/or organisers. These associated costs may include room hire, hire or purchase of materials and advertising, but not catering costs. The CA will not normally cover professional fees.

In your application, please provide details of your target audience (e.g. expected numbers and demographics) and how you intend to organize and advertise the event with EDI priorities in mind. Please also state how you intend to communicate and/or monitor the success of your event for reporting purposes to the CA (e.g. social media posts, blog entry, student questionnaires, photos) and how you intend to acknowledge the CA’s support.

Preference will be given to events which represent good value for money, look to build longer-term engagement with the classical world, and encourage access and widening participation e.g. by benefiting those who might otherwise have limited opportunities to encounter the Greek and Roman worlds.

Teaching Conferences

The Classical Association no longer provides funding to support traditional academic conferences hosted by universities.

However, the CA will consider applications from organisers of conferences which have a clear and significant connection to the teaching and learning of classical subjects in UK schools. For such conferences, organizers are invited to apply for a grant of up to £750.

See scheme for further information.

Schools

State-maintained schools and colleges are invited to apply for up to £500 towards funding one or more of the following types of event:

  • School talks, events or interactive sessions on the classical world;
  • Workshops and theatrical performances;
  • Greek and Roman study days;
  • Transport costs and/or entrance fees for groups of school students to attend one-day events off-site where this would otherwise be difficult financially (such events might include museum study days, classical exhibitions, re-enactments, trips to archaeological sites);
  • Transport/membership costs for local CA Branches events;
  • Reasonable travel expenses and associated costs for speakers and/or organisers;
  • Materials for Greek and Roman study days (e.g. classically-themed objects, decorations, or prizes).

See scheme for further information. Click here to view previous school projects they have supported

Branch Grants

The CA is proud to support the work of their local branches and offer generous start up grants, support for speakers’ travel and accommodation expenses, and funding for a range of outreach activities.

If you are applying for funds to support an event aimed at school-age learners, please provide details of:

  • The number and age(s) of students expected to participate the event;
  • How your event will benefit students from state-maintained schools and/or students from backgrounds which are traditionally under-represented in the teaching of classical subjects;
  • How you intend to advertise the event, bearing access, widening participation and EDI considerations in mind;
  • How you will communicate and/or monitor the success of the initiative (e.g. social media posts, blog entry, student or teacher questionnaires, photos).

Along with your application, you should also send a brief breakdown of costs and any supporting documentation providing further details of your planned event.

For more details and to apply for these grants, click on their Branches page.

Summer Schools

The CA supports a number of summer school bursary schemes enabling people who would not otherwise be able to do so to attend extra-mural courses in Greek, Latin, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History. We also provide bursaries for courses specifically aimed at teacher’s professional development, such as the British School at Athens School Teachers’ Course and the ArLT Summer School.

All applications must be made by the organisers of the summer school in question. Individuals seeking support should apply to the event’s organisers.

In your application, you should outline:

  • How many bursaries, and of what type, will be offered and how applications will be assessed and prioritised;
  • How you intend to organize and advertise the Summer School, bearing access, widening participation and EDI considerations in mind. In particular, please state how you intend to attract students from state-maintained schools and/or those from backgrounds which are traditionally under-represented in the teaching of classical subjects;
  • Your plans for monitoring the demographics of attendees at your Summer School (e.g. and esp. in terms of state-maintained selective, state-maintained non-selective and independent school background).  If this is an established Summer School, please also provide any demographic data you have captured in previous years;
  • How you intend to communicate and/or monitor the success of the Summer School for reporting purposes to the CA (e.g. social media posts, blog entry, student questionnaires, photos). Please also state how the CA’s support will be acknowledged.

Applications should normally be for a maximum of £2,500. To apply for summer school funding, please complete the Summer School Grant Application Form and send as an email attachment to canews@classicalassociation.org, ensuring that you have followed the guidelines above in order to avoid any unnecessary delays to your application.

Major Projects

The CA also provides funding for a small number of major projects, considered to be of fundamental benefit to the discipline. Successful applications are typically for projects that look to support and encourage the study of classical subjects in schools and sixth-form colleges. These have included Classics in Communities, Classics After the Classroom and the Advocating Classics Education (ACE) Project.

Please note that applications for major grants of £5,000 and over are only considered twice a year, following the 1 March and 1 September deadlines.

If you are seeking a grant for a major project, please contact the CA before submitting an application. Once you have discussed your project, event or initiative and are ready to apply, please use the Major Grant Application Form to send your application as an email attachment to canews@classicalassociation.org.

OTHER INITIATIVES

The CA has also helped to fund projects that lie outside these categories, such as the production of classics-themed classroom resources for teachers of other subjects and videos to promote the study of classics in schools.

If you wish to apply for funding for an event or initiative which does not fit into one of the above categories, please contact the CA to discuss your proposal.

Once you have discussed your project, event or initiative and are ready to submit an application, please complete the General Grant Application Cover Sheet and send as an email attachment to canews@classicalassociation.org. Along with your application, you should send a breakdown of costs and any supporting documentation relevant to your bid.

For examples of projects and activities which the CA has funded, see Previous Projects.
