Purpose of the fund

The Belfast City Council Support for Sport: Event Grant is aimed at attracting major sporting events to Belfast and assist organisations in the delivery of these events. The scheme is intended to increase the number of sporting events in Belfast’s sporting calendar.

Support for Sport: Sports Event Grant - specific conditions for eligibility

Organisations must be one of the following:

  • Affiliated to a national Governing body
  • Involved in a Sport which is recognised by Sport NI
  • Sports focused

Eligible costs

  • Accommodation for participants and officials who are from outside Northern Ireland
  • Advertising /marketing/ promotional costs
  • Appearance fees (may be capped)
  • Cleansing
  • Equipment hire
  • Facility hire (see ‘Restricted costs’ )
  • First aid
  • Insurance costs
  • Licensing fees
  • Officials costs, for example, referees
  • PA, staging and audio visual hire
  • Professional stewarding costs
  • Transport (within Belfast only)
  • Event video coverage

Criteria and scoring (%)

a) Event Planning - 22

  • Effective project planning
  • Quality of Event brief

b) Quality of how you deliver the festival. You should show:

  • Details of operational aspects
  • Effective marketing
  • Effective monitoring and evaluation

Capacity and Experience - 22

  • Organisational structure
  • Demonstrate experience of running previous events

Budget Feasibility - 16

  • Your budget, including your income, must be feasible and realistic
  • Other sources of income

Impact on Sport - 20

  • Who will benefit at a local level and how?
    • Officials / coaches
    • New members / participants
    • Will it encourage volunteering
    • Will the event benefit your sport on a national or city wide basis

Impact on Belfast - 20

  • Your event should generate a positive image of Belfast, either externally or by generating civic pride.
  • You need to provide evidence if you will be attracting visitors or creating bed nights from visiting participants or spectators
  • You should indicate if your event will have a significant economic impact

Completing your budget for small grants

You must show that all costs are reasonable and necessary to complete the project, and you should give them enough detail to assess this. For example, you should give the unit costs and quantities needed, 10 artists x £50 = total cost £500.

They will not consider your application as eligible if you do not provide a detailed project budget.
