Maximum award: £5,000 each financial year, organisations may only submit one application.
Purpose of the fund
The Belfast City Council Support for Sport Large Development Grants are designed for Belfast based sports clubs who wish to develop by undertaking a new project.
Support for Sport: Large Development Grant - specific conditions for eligibility
Organisations must have/ be:
- be a club or organisation affiliated to a governing body recognised by Sport Northern Ireland (National Governing Bodies are not eligible to apply)
- Belfast based, that is, must meet, train, compete and be administered within Belfast and / or have Belfast residents comprising at least 75% of its membership.
- Have in place a current, active club development plan covering a minimum of three years with at least 1 year remaining. It should include the project for which you are applying. Out of date plans will make the application ineligible.
- Have a National Governing Body Development plan
- Open to all sections of the community.
Eligible Project Costs
- This scheme is aimed at encouraging the development of sports within the Belfast area, either through the growth of existing clubs, or through projects aimed at encouraging new people to take up sporting activity.

- Coaches have relevant qualifications
- Appropriate coach to athlete ratios
- Clearly demonstrated coaching development plan
- Club development plan - 35
- Should demonstrate how it is linked to the Governing Body plan and project funding requested for and other relevant bodies
- There should be clear development pathways for coaches, staff, athletes and volunteers
- Cross-community relations and / or partnerships with other groups as part of club development plan
- Realistic targets
- Evidence of how the project will be sustained and continues to contribute to club development plan
- Clear need for requested funding

- Targets are clearly identified, appropriate and there is a clear plan of how they will be met
- Project is inclusive and will increase opportunities for participation in physical activity
- There is a focus on additional benefits such as health, crime diversion, and so on
- Project encourages; mentoring, support and education at all levels
- Organisation, management and value for money - 10
- The organisation must demonstrate their ability to manage the project and must demonstrate that this project represents value for money.
Completing your budget for small grants
You must show that all costs are reasonable and necessary to complete the project, and you should give them enough detail to assess this. For example, you should give the unit costs and quantities needed, 10 artists x £50 = total cost £500.
They will not consider your application as eligible if you do not provide a detailed project budget.
