Overview

Broadcast Appeals in Northern Ireland provide an opportunity for local charities to describe their work or to make an appeal for volunteers and funds.

These short programmes are broadcast throughout the year on BBC Northern Ireland television and radio and are also supported by a dedicated Appeals website. The appeals reach a large and diverse audience and contribute to wider awareness of issues and developments within the charitable sector.

Broadcast Appeals on BBCNI – Background Information

The BBC provides up to 11 broadcast slots to local charities each year on BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle. All Broadcast Appeals are accompanied by films which are published on the BBC’s digital platforms. And they are also published on BBCNI’s Appeals website.

BBC Broadcast Appeals in Northern Ireland began in 1927. These opportunities are available to local charities and organisations that operate at regional or sub-regional level, or which are involved in international work. Appeals can be used to promote awareness of a charity’s work, or to make a request for volunteers and/or financial support. The latter requires additional information about your charity’s finances.

Each Broadcast Appeal on BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle receives 2 transmissions (on Sunday morning and early Monday afternoon). This ensures that they reach a large and diverse audience. These broadcasts are of approximately 3.5 minutes’ duration. Full production support, including with script development and interviews, is available from the BBC.

All Broadcast Appeals are subject to the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and its Broadcast Appeals Policy.

The application will be reviewed by the BBC’s local Expert Advisory Group (Appeals). The application form is designed to help you provide them with all relevant information about your Appeal proposal.

These opportunities will be available from January 2025 onwards.
