Overview

In line with their historical roots, many of the projects that they will fund are in the West Midlands, particularly Birmingham and the Black Country (Wolverhampton, Dudley, West Bromwich, Smethwick, Sandwell). This area remains a priority for grassroots funding for the Trust.

Availability of funds will always dictate what grants they are able to make but they will try to ensure a fair geographic spread. Whilst their primary focus is on Birmingham and the West Midlands they will consider applications from elsewhere under some programmes. Please refer to the specific grant programme criteria to see what geographic areas are covered.

The priority of the Barrow Cadbury Trust is to fund grassroots, user-led projects. They favour innovative and visionary projects that are likely to have a high impact on social change, either at a policy or practice level. They will support projects that other funders consider risky and place great emphasis on projects that have strong leadership and are backed by local communities.

Projects they typically support are:

  • Led by users
  • Run by dynamic leaders
  • Using innovative and un-tested approaches
  • Working with partners to solve problems
  • Happy to share knowledge and experience
  • Supporting marginalised people and disaffected individuals and communities
  • Based in the West Midlands

They have consolidated funding into three programme areas:

  • Criminal Justice: Helping young adults who are in, or at risk of being in the criminal justice system, to make a successful transition to adulthood and improve their life chances.
  • Poverty and Inclusion Alleviating poverty and exclusion among marginalised groups.
  • Global Exchange: Exchanging good practice across boundaries and using it to reinvigorate debates taking place in the UK.

Criminal Justice Grant Programme

The Barrow Cadbury Trust supports groups developing pioneering approaches to working with young adults in the community, particularly at the grassroots. While seeking to develop partnerships for all of the Commission's recommendations, they are particularly keen to support groups working with young adults on these issues:

  • resettlement and employment
  • improving life chances.

They will only support West Midlands grassroots groups.

Poverty and Inclusion Grant Programme

The Inclusive Communities programme aims to foster a just and cohesive society by tackling poverty and exclusion among marginalized groups. Habits of Solidarity and Migration and Europe are our key grant programmes within the Inclusive Communities programme.

Within the Habits of Solidarity project they tend to fund organisations whose work aims to:

  • help foster understanding and co-operation between people of different ethnicities, religions and backgrounds
  • develop the economic independence and equality of disadvantaged people, especially women

Within their Migration and Europe project, they tend to fund organisations whose work aims to:

  • help under-represented migrant communities voice their concerns to those in positions of political power improve the lives of undocumented migrants
  • promote a more balanced public debate on migration and asylum
  • to address specific issues experienced by undocumented migrants, asylum seekers and refugees such as the restriction of access to health care and education

They support a number of European projects that campaign for a more progressive approach to EU policy on issues of diversity, integration and migration.

You may apply for these programmes from anywhere in the UK but most awards will be made in the West Midlands.
